Social media is the one thing that connects us all. It's how we communicate, how we stay informed, and how we interact with each other. We can keep in touch with friends and family who live far away. We can find out what our friends are up to. We can learn about events in our community.


But is it too much of a good thing? 

Are we losing touch with the world around us when we're always plugged into social media? Are we becoming too dependent on it? Or will it eventually take over the world?

In the beginning, many people used social media to stay connected with their friends and family. Still, then businesses began realizing their potential for marketing their products. Now, however, social media is used for everything from staying connected with family and friends to advertising products. The question is whether or not this will ever cause social media to rule the world.

Although social media has been around for a long time, it has only recently become a revolutionary and disruptive force in our culture. Many still question whether Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or even Google+ will ever rule the world; however, any doubt about their immense power is fading quickly. In fact, it may be fair to say that social media has already taken over. For example, more than one billion people use Facebook daily—meaning that more than one out of every seven people on Earth use the service. In short, Facebook is addictive. People cannot seem to get enough of it. In fact, it is amusing to see how many status updates and pictures of food people post on the site daily—but most importantly, it is clear that consumers are actively using these sites for shopping more and more each year.







Popularity

As if the popularity of these services weren't enough evidence of their ability to reach billions globally, the sheer number of dollars that they generate should be even more convincing. Facebook alone earned $2 billion in advertising revenue in 2012 and is on track to make even more in 2013. This means that Mark Zuckerberg's company likely made more money than The New York Times Company and Time Warner Inc. combined—and most likely earned more than.
